Student Accident Insurance
Parents should be aware that the OCDSB does not provide accident
insurance coverage in the event of student injuries that occur
on school premises or during school activities. Unfortunately,
despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents
can and do continue to happen. Some injuries incur medical,
dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial
health care or employer group plans. As a parent or guardian,
you become responsible for these expenses. Student accident
insurance is available, on a voluntary basis, through Reliable
Life Insurance Company. Forms will be NOT be distributed to
individual students, but can either be picked up from the
school office or downloaded at http://www.binks.ca www.binks.ca
or you may apply online at http://www.insuremykids.com www.insuremykids.com.

Update
for Parents
OCDSB French Immersion
On
18 December 2007, Board approved the continuation of Early French
Immersion (Senior Kindergarten entry) and Middle French Immersion
(Grade 4 entry) and the phase-out of Late French Immersion (Grade
7 entry) beginning in September 2008. This decision was based
on an intensive review of the literature, a summary of practices
in other Ontario school boards, data from central OCDSB departments,
and responses from stakeholder surveys conducted in the spring
of 2007 with elementary principals, vice-principals, teachers,
and randomly selected parents of both elementary and secondary
students.
In June 2008, Board subsequently approved the initiation of
the secondary phase of the FSL review in order to ensure the
provision of high quality FSL programs throughout the school
district. As a result, further information is being gathered
from central departments and from secondary school principals,
vice-principals, teachers and randomly selected secondary school
students as it pertains to the FSL programs offered in OCDSB
secondary schools. An information report is scheduled to be
presented to the 9 December 2008 Education Committee.
Should you wish to provide feedback on the FSL programs in the
secondary panel and have not had an opportunity to do so during
one of the consultation periods, we encourage you to send your
comments to FSLReview@ocdsb.ca.
More information about this review, along with electronic copies
of the reports that have been produced thus far, is available
on the OCDSB web site, www.ocdsb.ca.
Attention
Parents:
Recently,
OTHS has become aware of a new ski trip termed “S-Trip”
which is run through Handa Travel Student Trip Ltd. This is a
trip that is not sanctioned by Osgoode Township High School or
the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Further, graduation
trips to Cancun that take place during the March Break that are
traditionally attended by Grade 12 students are also not sanctioned
by the school or the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. This
means that no meetings for these trips will take place in the
school and no staff attend these trips as supervisors. Events
that are sanctioned by the school will contain a permission form
and it would be signed by a Principal or Vice Principal.
Thank You,
Brett Reynolds

Education Foundation of Ottawa
The
Education Foundation of Ottawa (EFO) was established to assist
students in the OCDSB who struggle from poverty issues. Over the
past year, the EFO has disbursed over $140,000 to pay for winter
coats, boots, hats and mitts, food vouchers, emergency medication
such as Epi-pens and other medications where the family cannot
afford it, running shoes, emergency transportation, and field
trip transportation for hundreds of low-income students and their
families.
During
the United Way Campaign this fall, we invite you to consider the
Education Foundation of Ottawa when making your United Way pledge
at your workplace. We are a registered charity and our Charitable
